Output options
Bars are always black on white — scanners need dark bars on a light background. Recolor at your own risk (and never red or metallic foil).
- UPC-A at 100% magnification ≈ 37.3 × 25.9 mm incl. quiet zones
- Bar height within tolerance
- Black bars on white — keep this zone free of foil, frost and spray color
Barcode sizing rules for cosmetics packaging
| Symbology | Where it goes | Nominal size (100%) | Allowed range | Quiet zone |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UPC-A | Retail unit label | 37.3 × 25.9 mm | 80% – 200% | ≥ 9× bar width each side (~3 mm at 100%) |
| EAN-13 | Retail unit label | 37.3 × 25.9 mm | 80% – 200% | ≥ 11× bar width left, 7× right |
| ITF-14 | Master shipping case | 142.8 × 32 mm with bearer bars | 50% – 100% | ≥ 10× bar width each side |
| Code 128 | Internal labels | flexible | — | ≥ 10× bar width each side |
Placement on bottles, jars & tubes
Rotate on tight cylinders
On bottles under ~76 mm diameter (most droppers, pumps and lip products), print the barcode in “ladder” orientation — bars running around the curve, not along it. Bars printed across a tight curve distort and fail to scan.
Avoid foil, frost & transparency
Scanners read contrast. Never place a barcode over hot-stamped foil, metallic spray, heavy frost, or a clear label on dark product. Reserve a solid white patch on your label dieline — Packfolio's label editor blocks decoration in the barcode zone automatically.
One GTIN per variant
Every retail variant — each shade, each size — needs its own GTIN (UPC/EAN). A 30 ml and 50 ml of the same serum are two barcodes. Retailers and Amazon will reject reused codes.
