Bars are always black on white — scanners need dark bars on a light background. Recolor at your own risk (and never red or metallic foil).

  • UPC-A at 100% magnification ≈ 37.3 × 25.9 mm incl. quiet zones
  • Bar height within tolerance
  • Black bars on white — keep this zone free of foil, frost and spray color

Placement on bottles, jars & tubes

Curved surfaces

Rotate on tight cylinders

On bottles under ~76 mm diameter (most droppers, pumps and lip products), print the barcode in “ladder” orientation — bars running around the curve, not along it. Bars printed across a tight curve distort and fail to scan.

Print & finish

Avoid foil, frost & transparency

Scanners read contrast. Never place a barcode over hot-stamped foil, metallic spray, heavy frost, or a clear label on dark product. Reserve a solid white patch on your label dieline — Packfolio's label editor blocks decoration in the barcode zone automatically.

Compliance

One GTIN per variant

Every retail variant — each shade, each size — needs its own GTIN (UPC/EAN). A 30 ml and 50 ml of the same serum are two barcodes. Retailers and Amazon will reject reused codes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to buy my barcode numbers from GS1?
If you plan to sell into retail (Ulta, Target, Sephora) or on Amazon, yes — buy a GS1 company prefix or single GTINs at gs1.org / gs1us.org. Amazon validates GTINs against the GS1 database, and cheap reseller barcodes are routinely rejected. This tool generates the barcode image from a number you already own; it does not issue numbers.
What's the difference between UPC-A and EAN-13?
UPC-A is the 12-digit US standard; EAN-13 is the 13-digit international standard. A UPC-A is actually an EAN-13 with a leading zero, and modern scanners read both. If you sell only in the US, use UPC-A; if you sell internationally, EAN-13.
Does each shade or size of my product need its own barcode?
Yes. A GTIN identifies one sellable variant. Different shade, size, scent, or pack count = different GTIN. A 12-shade lipstick line needs 12 UPCs, plus an ITF-14 case code per master carton if you ship to retail distribution.
What is the check digit, and why is it auto-calculated?
The last digit of a UPC/EAN/ITF code is a checksum (computed with the GS1 modulo-10 algorithm) that lets scanners catch misreads. Enter your code without it and we compute it; paste a full code and we verify it — a wrong check digit means the barcode won't validate at retail intake.
Should the barcode be on the primary packaging or the carton?
Both, usually. The UPC/EAN goes on whatever the customer buys — the unit label or unit carton. The ITF-14 goes on the master shipping case. If your bottle sells without a carton, the UPC must be on the bottle label itself — plan a flat white zone for it in your label dieline.
SVG or PNG — which file should I send to my label printer?
SVG (vector), placed at 100% scale in your label artwork. Vector bars stay razor-sharp at any print resolution. Use PNG only for mockups or marketplace listings. Packfolio's decoration spec packages your barcode into the print-ready PDF/X-4 dieline automatically.
